20140121-DHS

1/21/2014 DHS

A web portal that serves the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has exposed over 500 private documents submitted by over 100 organizations as part of a request by the DHS Science & Technology division for a new communications system. Some 16 of the organizations had bank information among the compromised material.

The company that runs web portal provides the same, or similar, services for other government departments including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the General Services Administration (GSA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Department of Justice (DOJ), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) among others.

The what and where seem well described, but who, when, why and how remain open questions.

… The incident appears to have occurred sometime over the prior four months.

… documents were downloaded … by unauthorized persons outside of the agency
